Add to calendarEvaristo performs three of the twelve narrators of Girl, Woman, Other and explains where the punctuation went.
She read Amma, Carole and Hattie back to back. Two hundred people, and you could hear who had already read the book by which line got the laugh.
Evaristo co founded Britain's first Black women's theatre company in 1982 and published eight books before Girl, Woman, Other made her the first Black woman to win the Booker Prize, at sixty. She calls her form 'fusion fiction' and has spent decades campaigning for writers of colour in British publishing.
